Beauty and the Beast

Scenic Design, 2022

This production, as the first live production at Kennedy Middle School post-pandemic, was designed to be fun, bright, energetic, and lively. The main feature of the scenery was a large book with movable pages creating backgrounds for each of the scenes. Students aged 5th-8th grade were involved in both designing and fabricating the scenery, with their sketches and ideas being the basis for the book pages and students helping build every piece onstage.

Oversized books and bookshelf-looking step units filled the left and right sides of the stage, while a large faux stained glass mural of a rose framed the stage. The stained glass piece was created using lighting gels so that when lit from behind, the mural would glow and change colors to match the mood of the scene.
